'Swedish' thrifting...

It's Thrift Thursday so let me show you my latest thrifty acquisition this week...

a Swedish Plett pan! Score!!! I am so excited that I will be able to try out this recipe for whole grain Swedish pancakes that I found via Craft. Thinking I might make a sauce with my gooseberries to go with them or since I am feeling a bit impatient a trip to Wegmans for some lingonberry jam would suffice. Ooo, and some powdered sugar is needed as well! My third generation Swedish-American husband will be so happy! I have the urge to go to Ikea now too...

::every day in February:: day 9: 'sticks...'

When I was growing up, my mom always made us corn sticks in a cast iron pan. I have fond memories of enjoying a corn stick slathered with butter and then dipped in chili. As an adult I had been keeping my eyes out for the same type of pan when I went thrifting. On two different thrifting occassion I was happy to stumble upon a cast iron corn stick pan at a reasonable price. Now I get to make corn sticks for my children, and it makes me happy to pass on the corn stick tradition (especially good with soups, stewes, and chilis!). I made them tonight (sans butter on top this time) with a yellow split pea soup, and for the first time Lukas not only (finally!) tried one but proceeded to eat two!!! My never-fail recipe (doubled) is the same one my mom still makes.You can jazz it up with cheddar cheese and green chilies or corn kernels (or whatever your imagination can think of!), but I often keep it as is so we can enjoy it reheated in the morning with butter and honey. Tonight I did 12 corn sticks (bake 12-15 min.) and my medium cast iron skillet and all the sticks were devoured. Looking forward to breakfast tomorrow morning!

Oh my GOODNESS, guess what I found at a local thrift store today?!?!?!? A vintage 4" Weave-it Loom in PERFECT condition for, wait for it, $1.50!  

S C O R E !!!

It has the original price tag on the back for $1.69 at a store in Lancaster, PA. (need to take a photo of that too!). So exciting! It is adorable, and I can't wait to use it! There is lots of tiny weaving loom goodness on flickr that I want to scroll through too. Did I need another craft???? Umm, yep.

I also got two oval embroidery hoops for 25 cents each (these are much harder to find than the circular ones) and two issues of Everyday Food magazine for 20 cents each. I love thrifting!

Thrift find!

Today's score: I paid $1.25 (Bargained from $2!) for Italian Family Dinners by Edward Giobbi & Eugenia Giobbi Bone that I found at a local used book store. I have been wanting this book and was so excited to find it today!

Happy Thrift Thursday!

Our family went to Shupps Grove in Adamstown, PA over the Labor Day weekend. My kiddos had the best time spending their allowance. The vendors were so sweet to them and often lowered their prices for them or even gave them things for free! My husband found some treasures too! I came home with these two treasures from the 1960s: vintage metal recipe box & 1.5 pt. Pyrex bowl. I have another piece with this pattern that I found a couple years ago. While we were in Adamstown we couldn't resist a visit to Stoudts Brewery, and we even got there in time for a tour. Delicious food and beer! I can heartily recommend the Triple Abbey ...mmm!

Both cast iron corn stick pans were found at local thrift shops on different days. The darker one was found today. My mom had one of these that she used when I was growing up. I remember loving to eat the hot crispy corn sticks slathered with melting butter. Now to season them and make some corn sticks for my kiddos! Yum!

My latest thrift find was a fifty cent cookbook in very good condition. I had checked this book out of the library years ago and copied many recipes from it. Now I own it and will be passing on the recipe cards (mom asked first!). Lukas likes it too! He was ten months yesterday...tempus fugit!
